IGAD fails to lift Dr. Machar house arrest

Addis Ababa, November 30, 2019 (SSNA) — The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) failed to release South Sudan’s main opposition leader, Dr. Riek Macahar, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army-In Opposition (SPLM/A-IO) says.

The armed states that leaders of IGAD met on November 29 in Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa and that Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni objected to the Machar’s request to be free.

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) wants Machar release.

The Ugandan President publicly support President Salva Kiir. He intervened in the civil war and sent troops to fight alongside South Sudan’s soldiers against the SPLA-IO.

Uganda currently has troops in the Yei River State operating alongside government troops against the National Salvation Front (NAS).
